MY STORY

THE INSPIRATION

MY TRAVELS

I draw inspiration from my travels.

After years of working in the corporate world, driven by longing for freedom and a deep desire to follow my impulses, I chose the path of adventure. Traveling as a free spirit and living on the other side of the world was a cathartic experience - a wild escape from the rat race and a chance to rediscover life.

The joy of exploration led me to new cultures, unfamiliar places, and extraordinary people– humble local artisans, fashion designers, and Jewelry makers - who profoundly shaped my perspective on the world.

Building trust and genuine connections with these incredibly talented souls was life-changing. What began as a business relationship evolved into some of the most meaningful friendships.

Everything is beautiful when it is made with heart and soul.

THE ROOTS OF HOME

One of my other greatest sources of inspiration comes from my roots – my mother.

As a seamstress, her favourite fashion piece was the now iconic Dior “Little Black Dress”.

Knowing my mother’s journey as a post-war migrant seamstress - leaving her Island home in Europe to continue her life’s work in a new country - I have always been proud of her story.

So when she asked to visit “The House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture” fashion exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, I was honored to take her. Seeing her delight in every intricate detail of Dior's craftmanship brought her spirit alive.

As a young woman and throughout my 20’s, I watched my mother work tirelessly to create beautiful fashion pieces. She took great pride in making me look my best, meticulously sewing almost all of my dresses, skirts, and suits.

We would handpick fabrics and patterns together, and she would tailor every sleeve and hem to perfection. Every piece was unique - made with love, and something no one else had.

My mother understood that true artistry requires passion, patience, time, effort, and skill. For her, sewing was her art.

The embroidery motifs, from her Island home, are renowned worldwide, depicting scenes of everyday life. These handcrafted pieces are proudly displayed in the Museum of Folklore – a testament to their cultural significance!

Through my travels and my mother's influence, I developed a deep appreciation for handmade craftsmanship. This, combined with my passion for gemstones and fabric, led me to create Mara Blak.
